A size 6 split shot is pinched onto a short length of line and positioned on the outside of the bend of the hook. This naturally adds weight to the hook, making it heavy and stay low in the mouth of the fish. Adding weight to the point without impeding penetration and therefore almost guiding the hook home, obviously gives the angler a great advantage. Shrink tubing over the eye of the hook increases the performance of the rig further still.
